How to Dispose of a Mattress in Dallas
Last checked: Oct 25, 2026 · Source: City of Dallas Sanitation — Brush and Bulky Item Collection
Dallas lists mattresses as an accepted item in its monthly curbside brush and bulky item collection. Set the mattress just behind the curb between Thursday and Sunday before your collection week, or haul it yourself to the City landfill or a transfer station.
Quick answer

Option 1: Monthly brush & bulky curbside collection
- Find your collection week on the City of Dallas 2026 Brush & Bulky collection calendar.
- Set the mattress out between Thursday and Sunday before your collection week. Early set-outs are subject to enforcement action, including citations.
- Place it just behind the curb line in front of your home — not on the side of the house, in an alley, or on property across from or next to yours.
- Keep it out of the street and off the sidewalk, and at least 5 feet from roll carts, mailboxes, fences or walls, water meters, telephone connection boxes, parked cars, fire hydrants, utility or light poles, and traffic signs.
- Don't place it under low-hanging tree limbs or power lines. Crews use a grapple arm and won't collect what they can't reasonably reach.
- Keep the whole pile within 10 cubic yards. Bagged household garbage and anything that fits in your garbage roll cart isn't accepted in bulky collection.
Getting rid of more than 10 cubic yards
Once per calendar year you can request an oversize collection of up to 20 cubic yards, online, through the Dallas 311 app, or by calling 3-1-1. Submit the request the week before your brush/bulk collection week — up until Sunday 11:59 p.m. before your scheduled collection week. It can't be canceled once submitted.
Set-outs over the limit (or containing prohibited items) are generally still collected, but are automatically billed at $60 per 5 cubic yards, in 5 cubic yard increments. An Orange Tag on your pile means a violation was found that must be corrected before the City will service it.
Option 2: Haul it yourself
The City says there is no charge for Dallas residents in passenger cars, station wagons, pickups, and trailers less than 15 feet long hauling their own waste from their residences to the landfill or a transfer station. Bring a current, valid driver's license plus proof of Dallas residency (a Dallas address on your ID or a current Dallas water bill). The City's facility pages list household waste (and, for the landfill, furniture) among accepted materials, but they don't name mattresses specifically.

Between Thursday and Sunday before your collection week. Find your week on the City's 2026 Brush & Bulky collection calendar. Early set-outs can be cited.

Just behind the curb line in front of your home, not in the alley, street or sidewalk, and at least 5 feet from mailboxes, roll carts, fences, meters, hydrants, poles, signs and parked cars.
