Option 1: Curbside bulky item collection (twice a year)
- Watch for the door hanger 7–10 days ahead. The date on it is when your pile should be set out, not the actual collection day. Collections can take up to a week to complete.
- Have the mattress out no later than 7 a.m. on the Monday of your scheduled collection week.
- Place it at the curb in front of your house, within eight feet of the curb, even if your garbage is normally collected in the alley.
- Keep the whole bulky pile to no more than eight cubic yards.
- Don't block the pile, put it in front of parked cars or under low-hanging tree limbs, or place it on a vacant lot or on top of a water meter.
- Keep brush out of the bulky pile. Mixing in brush, an obstructed pile, or setting out after crews have passed can bring a fine of up to $2,000 per day plus a collection and disposal fee.
Missed your collection or need an extra one?
Report a missed collection online or by calling 3-1-1 (210-207-6000). For an additional bulky collection, request an out-of-cycle collection online or through 3-1-1. The fee is based on the size of the pile, a staff member gives a free estimate, and after the fee is paid the collection is made within two working days.
Option 2: Drop it off at a Bulky Waste Collection Center
The centers are for City residential customers only. Bring a recent CPS Energy bill showing payment of the City's Environmental Fee, plus a photo ID; if you pay the environmental fee, the visit is free. Bulky items are limited to four cubic yards, loads in trucks must not be over the fender wheel of the bed, and materials from commercial waste haulers are not accepted. Mattresses are accepted, but mattresses with blood stains or bed bugs, bed linens, and soiled couch cushions with blood or bed bugs are not.
Hours: Tuesday–Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
